Traveling
with children can be a delight or a nightmare. Selecting
a vacation spot that the whole family will enjoy is
important, but proper planning for the trip will also
ensure that everyone has a good time. In your
preparations you may wish to set aside some time for
quiet time and vacation reading activity. Reading
can be a vacation activity during rain or shine, for kids
and adults. Reading can take place at the breakfast table
in addition to quiet times. Encourage children to read
from the restaurant menu. Reading from the back of cereal
box can also be fun. Let each child pack their own small
travel pack which special items and a favorite book.
Bring a few brand new books for them to enjoy. Vacations
can be busy, but there is usually some free unstructured
time for nurturing a child's reading skills. This is the
time for relaxation fiction which shouldn't be an
extension of school reading. A trip to an exotic location
such as the Florida Keys will expose the child to new
activities and experiences and whet the youngster's
appetite for books about dolphins, snorkeling, nature,
pirates, and seashells, birds and more. By selecting
their own books children gain a sense of
ownership. Vacations
are a time to read and to be read to. Most kids know
about J.K Rowling and the Harry Potter books and perhaps
they have heard about Shel Silverstein. Before he passed
away Shel Silverstein lived in Key West. Youngster love
to hear selections from Silverstein's book of wacky
poems, Where the Sidewalk Ends. Start each day
with a silly poem. Children's
books can be found throughout the Keys. Most attractions,
museums, parks, and resorts in the Florida Keys have
books which will appeal to children. Bookstores in the
Florida Keys while generally small, have a ready supply
of interesting books, new fiction, childrens' books, plus
beach books and best sellers for adults. A
