MOVIES FOR KIDS IN THE FLORIDA KEYS Rent a movie or go to the cinema. Movie-going families have long become accustomed to large impersonal multiplex theaters. Children are use to going to megaplex theaters with movie choices gallore but have they ever been to a drive-in or theater with community atmosphere? Probably not. The Keys has no drive-in to offer but it does have something unique which the kids will enjoy.  . Marathon Community Cinema - MM 50 Oceanside Instead of going to a multiplex theater and being herded into one of a dozen screens with identical rooms take the family to the Marathon Community Theater. Children will love this movie "palace". It is a unique family theater in that it's small and in addition to traditional movie seating it has barrel chairs and cocktail sized tables arranged casually in the front half of the theater facing the large screen. The tables are wonderful for the soda, popcorn, candy, and food available to patrons at the refreshment counter. Arrive early as seating is limited to around 100. Kids and adults love it because it's different. Current movies shown twice nightly. 305-743-0288 . Tavenier Towne Twin Cinema - MM 91.5 More conventional movie theater with multiple cinemas offering families a choice of five an evening. 305-853-2003 . BlockBuster Video Stores - in Marathon - 5800 Overseas Highway 305-743-3034, in Key Largo - 99625 US 1, 305-451-1313, in Tavernier - 91100 Oversea Hywy, 305-852-0202 Do your accommodations have a VCR? If so rent some children's videos about the Keys for evening viewing . Suggestions: 1. Rent the movie "True Lies" for viewing the night before you visit the old Seven Mile Bridge and Pigeon Key. See if the kids can recognize any of Key's location shots used in the movie. Pigeon Key and the end of the old bridge at the entrance to Pigeon Key looks different because the open section was replaced for the movie. The pull-off where the old Seven Mile Bridge begins also is different. The movie producers had to have concrete poured at this location which they then painted black to look like the original asphalt. This was where the Harrier jet took off. The asphalt pavement couldn't support the weight and heat of the jet. Arnold Swazenagger rented a home on Duck Key during the filming of the movie. Jamie Lee Curtis and Tom Arnold stayed at Hawk's Cay Resort. 2. Do you plan to visit a Dolphin Encounter facility? Rent a "Flipper" movie for evening viewing. On the following day visit the Dolphin Research Center, former home of "Flipper" the movie star, or visit any of the other dolphin encounter facilities in the Keys. If you can rent the most recent Flopper movie filmed in the Keys you may recognize scenes filmed at Pigeon Key and Hawk's Cay. . Hawk's Cay Marina Store - MM 61 Duck Key Drive The marina store has videos for rent.    . A Key Encounter - Key West, Clinton Square Market and 291 Front Street - 305-292-2070 A twenty-five minute narrated movie takes viewers to the coral reef to learn about marine life. In addition to Key's marine ecology, viewers get a glimpse the flora and fauna of the Keys. In case you weren't able to spy the real thing at the Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine, the movie will provider information and pictures of Key Deer, the alligators of Blue Hole, and other animals indigenous to the Florida Keys. Cost to adults $3. Youth ages 4 to 12 pay $1.  . Multiplex Theatre - Key West - Searstown Shopping Center. N. Roosevelt Avenue This is the only theater in Key West and the Lower Keys. It does offer more movie choices.  . Cinema Shores - Key West Atlantic Shores Resort - 510 South Street . 305-296-2491. The 9 PM time of showing and the movie offerings limit going to Cinema Shores with young children. Sometimes they will show older popular feature films which may be suitable for family viewing. What's unique is the films are shown outdoors under the tropical sky by the resort pool.
