A
SAFETY NET FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES IN CRISIS
Since
its founding in 1989, thousands of children and families
have received services from Florida Keys Children's
Shelter, Inc. Available to children and families in
distress are emergency shelter, short term shelter,
community-based counseling, and 24-houir crisis
intervention services.
EMERGENCY
SHELTER
The
Florida Keys Children's Shelter p[rovides emergency
shelter to children and youth 10 to 17 years of age who
have been removed from their homes due to allegations of
abuse, abandonment or neglect, or who are awaiting foster
placementor adoption. Emergency shelter may be long or
shot term depending on the needs of the child and is
determined by the court.
TEMPORARY
SHELTER
Shelter
services provide a safe and supportive environment for
youth in distress. Youth and families in crisis are
provided with temporary shelter, an opportunity for a
cooling off period and time for counseling support and
safe discussion of issues, options, and outcomes in order
to prevent destructive behavior..
The
Florida Keys not only attracts touring families but
sadly, runaway youth from across the country.The Florida
Keys Children's Shelter provides temporary shelter for
young people who are homelessor runaways and waant to
return homre. The Shelter ptovides a safe place for them
to stay while staff members work toward reuniting
families or to find other appropriate
placement.
COMMUNITY-BASED
COUNSELING
In
addition to its providing counseling at its Shelter, the
Florida Keys Children's Shelter provides counseling at
six locations in the Florida Shelter the Florida Keys
thus providing easy , ongoing and accessible counseling
service to at-risk students and families throughout the
Keys.
