ICE CREAM
" I scream for ice cream, we all scream for ice cream." Christopher Columbus and others before him never tasted ice cream, but he may have tasted flavored iced desserts. The idea of iced desserts, began sometime after explorer Marco Plo brought back descriptions of juices made from fruit upon return from travels in China. Recipes for making fruit flavored milk and water based ices were developed by Italian cooks. In 1670 Fransico Propcopio, a Sicilian, began selling ices and sherberts in a cafe in Paris. So popular was the concept that within 6 years over 200 ice shoppes could be found in the city.
Cream ices are thought to have been developed by a Parisian cafe owner named Tortoni in the late 1700s. In the new world, wealthy landowners including American patriots George Washington. Thomas Jefferson, and Dolly Madison served ice cream. The edible ice cream cone got its start at the 1904 World's Fair held in the City of St. Louis. The ice cream soda was invented in 1874 in Philadelphia. Philadelphia was the center for icre cream manufacturing at that time.
