PrintFinders.com
A number of the
individual web pages on this website have links to bird
prints available through PrintFinders.com. These
prints are generally smaller in size - 18.75" x 27.5"
than the 23' x 30' bird prints shown above. Prints of the
Key West Pigeon (Quail Dove), the White Crowned Pigeon,
the Roseate Tern, and the Purple Heron are only available
through PrintFinders.com. Prices for a smaller print of
18.75" x 27.5" size understandably will be less than a
larger 23' x 30' print. Both Art.com and PrintFinder.com
provide a matting and framing option.
Original
Havell Prints
Prints
available from Art.com and PrintFinder.com generally cost
in the mid $20 to mid $30 range depending on size, the
paper, and the process used in reproduction.
Individual
plates from the original Havell edition generally sell
for between $5,000 and $175,000 depending on the image.
The original Havell "top of the line" "double elephant"
folio prints of Birds of America, measuring approximately
26 x 39 were published between 1827 and 1838. Engraved
mainly by Robert Havell, Audubon's prints were
hand-colored and hand-printed with watermark and
date. There were 435 plates in each folio and
an estimated 180 complete folios published. Only
about 135 sets are known to exist and most of these are
part of institutional collections. In good condition
without tears or folds and with little trimming from
their original size the cost of a print will be many
thousands of dollars.
The price
in 2002 for an Audubon Tell-Tale Godwit or snipe print
showing two birds in a Florida farm setting was $5,500.
The asking price for a print of the Florida Jay in
excellent color but trimmed to 22 x 28 inches was $7,500.
A dated 1835 Roseate tern print trimmed well inside plate
mark was priced at $1,800. In New York in the year
2000, a complete copy of Birds of America sold for
$8,802,500.
1972
Amsterdam edition
In 1972
in the Netherlands a reprint of Audubon's Birds of
America was published. There were 250 numbered sets of
full size prints measuring 100 x 67 cm. (39 x 25 inches).
The 1972
edition reproduced faithfully the original Havell
edition. All 435 full-size colorplates were of the
highest standard of quality, utilized the most advanced
printing techniques and were reproduced on paper similar
in quality to the original. A 1972 print of the American
Flamingo sold for $4,500.
